Memories of Sneezing: Television & Movies

As my memories of television are probably more bold than those of books, I've always assumed that an interest may have been sparked through either one, but my earliest recognition of liking sneezing came from Sesame Street... I think :-) Here are a bunch of memories from TV shows/episodes and movies featuring sneezing that caught my attention when I was growing up. There's a lot of Sesame Street, but I promise there's more on here than just that!

Sesame Street

Sesame Street really deserves its own large section here as my first acknowledged liking of sneezing was seeing Snuffy (Big Bird's "imaginary" friend, the Snuffalupagus) sneeze from a cold. It was a darling episode; Snuffy sneezed at the very beginning and the rest of the neighborhood remarked on the great winds that day (this was back when the rest of the neighborhood didn't know he was real).
Snuffy caught cold in a much later episode of the show as well (when he had a little sister named Alice, to sort of give some time perspective). One of the fun activities on that show was sneeze bowling, where Snuffy would sneeze towards pins and they would count how many pins had been knocked down.
Another of Snuffy's marvels was putting on a puppet show. I can't remember the puppet's name, but it was a little guy with a serious-type name. Snuffy would wear this puppet on the end of his snuffle(nose) and every time he put on a show, he would never, ever make it through without sneezing, causing the puppet to fly off and the show to be over. But every time he tried sooo hard not to sneeze, and to hold it back as long as possible. ie, cute build-ups.
Another segment had Snuffy sneezing to launch Slimey the worm into space. And another had him sneezing from pretending to be a vaccuum. Quite a lot of potential for such a snuffle, huh?

Another segment I loved quite a lot was the Count counting flowers. He liked to count flowers because he was allergic to them and when finished counting flowers he could count sneezes. I remember thinking about the Count's "I c-c... I c-c... I c-c-can count sneezes!" many many times when thinking of the types of build-ups I liked more. After mentioning this to a friend on e-mail, who may indeed have brought it up before I did, said friend was nice enough to record this segment and send it to me!

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

There were a number of smaller segments featuring sneezing that I adored. There are so many that I won't go into too much detail, but I want to at least mention them:
  • Mr.Meep Tried to Sleep- A cartoon with the plot of "Mr.Meep tried to sleep, but the man below would snore... Mr.Meep tried to sleep, but the man above would sneeze." When the man sneezed, it was deep and strong and shook the whole house. Everything stopped when this segment came on, I adored it.
  • Bert's Sneeze- I remember really loving this skit. Bert sneezes into a big handkerchief and ends up sneezing his nose off, much to Ernie's amusement
  • Bert's Cold- this was on a Sesame Street record/tape which I ended up damaging (I was 5 and left it in the sun too long and never forgave myself). CUTE sketch where Ernie is trying to get Bert to go out and play and Bert keeps telling him he can't because he's sick. Bert sneezes plenty of times, and even has to sneeze while taking his temperature... nice sense of urgency. Don't recall how it ended.
  • Achoo- An adorable cartoon that I *really* loved maybe more than any other sneeze on Sesame Street, mainly because of sooooo many sneezes and the song was specifically about sneezing. The cartoon man in it would go around sneezing freely and people would duck and buildings would crumble and the man looked just sooo darlingly cute and miserable!! He finally got on a bus, pulled out a hanky, and sneezed into that (covering his nose). And then the dog(who caught his cold of course) sneezed and the bus crumbled. What I wouldn't give for a tape of this one!
  • Ten Commandments of Health- no one actually sneezed in this one as I recall... if so, it wasn't good enough to stick in my mind. But I do remember that I really liked the way the woman singing it sang the word 'sneezing' and the talk about it
  • The Sneeze Song- I actually have this on MP3 if anyone is interested in it. It's a sketch I actually managed to video tape(I sat it in the morning, taped it on an afternoon repeat), but then lost the video! :-( It takes place on a far where everyone is sick with colds and sneezing- farmer, sheep animals- everyone.
  • Big Round Nose- A song about how wonderful having a nose is... for many reasons- sneezing being the important one of course
  • Others- I am *certain* there are others. I know of one where I think Bert is turned into a snowman to model for Ernie and gets cold and sneezes at the end *I think*. There are others I don't remember very well at all like Linda sneezing while signing for one of those sketches with sign language interpretation. Anyway, there is much more, I'm sure. But the above ones are the ones I really loved and remember well.
Read My Previous Words on this for even more detail.

More on Public Television

I watched quite a lot of PBS as a child, so the beginning of this page is rather skewed in that! :-)

Today's Special- This was a fantastic show that I was madly in love with. I watched it faithfully when it was on! There are two episodes I am most interested in:
  • Noses- Episode where Muffy the mouse catches a cold and there is talk about noses and sneezing (the computer does a bit on it). Cute episode :-)
  • Balloons- I really think that this is where my liking of handkerchief sneezes comes from! Sam, the older puppet guy had a really bad cold and sneezes several times! They were very cute and to this day I remember them.. fondly.
Zoobilee Zoo- OK, hardly anyone remembers this, but it was another of my most favorite childhood shows. There were two episodes that had sneezing. One was where Whazzat(my favorite!) wanted to go camping but Lookout Bear caught a cold and couldn't take her. I believe he sneezed a few times, and I remember him walking out of his tent(house) looking frazzled and carrying a tissue box. Poor guy. :-(
The other episode starred Bravo Fox(my least favorite character). He caught a bad cold and refused to call the doctor; we learned later he was afraid of the doctor. But he stayed in bed with tissues and blankets and there was the whole lot of typical stuff- thermometer, chiken soup, everything :-)

Other Shows/Movies... Taping
One of the most interesting things about my past is my recognition of my liking of sneezing and colds at an early age through the tv. When we got a VCR, it was purely instinctual to tape all I could. Now, when you're 12 and living with your parents and they stumble on a show or two that you've taped that has the characters sneezing that's one thing. When they see you have 10 of them... it's along that line of my having to explain that I like watching sneezing and I didn't want to do that. Not because I thought it was weird, but I thought they might think it was a little silly. Anyway, I *did* manage to tape a lot of different things, and would watch them cautiously only when I was alone in the house!

I do have fond memories of a few episodes/movies with sneezing in them... wishing I had some of them on tape!
  • Perfect Strangers, Ladies and Germs- One of my other favorite shows as a child! There was an episode where Larry catches a cold and Balki uses a plant to heal him. The girls another others at work also have colds and take it, but Larry uses too much and gets greedy at the quick remedy and it backfires, of course.
  • Santa Claus: the movie- a sweet guy online was able to find this movie and make a copy of it for me, from it, the pictures on the left. I loved this movie and this is one of the reasons. The boy in it catches a cold and is taken care of by his girl friend. He sneezes while out in the rain, then again when they are trying to hide from the bad coporation men.
  • Full House- Jessie has a cold and is *very* cute at that! He ends up taking too much cold medicine however!
  • Batman: the animated series- in an episode with Mr.Freeze, Batmas catches a cold. Alfred is there with tissues and chicken soup, but Batman can't let a cold slow him down, nor can Bruce Wayne. I love the character of Batman (always thought Adam West was adorable because he talked like he was constantly stuffed up!) and liked this episode for realistically portraying his chracter wile sick with a cold.
  • Heaven Help Us- I think that was the name of it. ??? It was a UPN show about a couple who died and came back as ghosts to help people out. In one episode they were sneaking around to find something and the house was full of Hiacynth flowers, which made him sneeze badly, and he kept trying to keep from doing so.
  • Who's the Boss- I find this one interesting, because it was actually the two women on the show who catch colds in this episode. And yet, I really liked it and felt compelled to tape it many years before TOS. I think what most appealed to me was Johnathan taking care of his mom and grandmother.. I liked him and thought that was really, really cute.
  • Star Trek:TNG, Angel One- while I LOVED this show(yes, I'm a closet Trekkie) one of the only episodes I taped was the one where the mysterious virius spreads around the ship. I really liked Wes, who gets sick first... and Worf sneezes a few times. Everyone gets sick.. YUMMY! Though my favorite was of course Captain Piccard struck down with a fever. SOooooooo cute
  • DONT KNOW- One of my earliest memories of actual PEOPLE sneezing was from a 90's Saturday morning show. It wasn't a cartoon- it was with a cast of teenagers... probably this was early to mid 90's... I have NO idea what the name of the show. There was a whole episode about being sick. The teens would put on skits but you'd also see them on the set in the big house or whatever between skits with a plot line and the skits would somehow revolve around that plotline. One of the characters was either sick or had the hiccups and if I had to pick, honestly I think he/she had a cold. Maybe it's wishful remembering.. but that's what I remember. Anyway, the whole gang was trying to come up with remedies... like rearranging the living room furnature.
It's one of the skits that I remember the most, though, and for the life of me I can't find a mention of any of this on the internet. But the skit was SO adorable that it REALLY caught my attention as a kid. So... the skit was 3 friends (2 guys and a girl) who are going to the beach on vacation finally. They've been trying forever and something always comes up. So they're waiting on a 4th friend to show up... he's always sick or has to visit grandma or something.. but this time he's well and on his way and they're all very excited. While they're waiting, they decide to order a pizza and the guy who delivers is has a really bad cold and sneezes on the pizza before they open the door. They answer the door and the guy is sniffling and such... they manage to pay him, carefully acknowledging and avoiding the germs with skill. They are excited and feel triumphant that they were not sneezed on and thus will not get sick. Of course, by the time they finish the pizza, they're all sneezing and sick, and by the time their 4th friend shows up all happy and ready to leave, they all just give up on the vacation and go home with colds.
Anyway... so that was my first "crush" with actual people.. not cartoon characters or muppets I really hope some day I can figure out what show this was! LOL!
This is a list of television episodes or movies I liked as a child that had sneezing (or colds) in them. It's probably not all of them, but I'll keep adding as I remember them, of course.
  • Sesame Street, of course
  • Today's Special, 2 episodes: Noses, Balloons
  • Zoobilee Zoo, 2 episodes
  • Perfect Strangers, Ladies and Germs
  • Batman: the animated series, Heart of Ice
  • Santa Calus: The Movie
  • Who's the Boss
  • Roseanne
  • Step by Step
  • Full House
  • Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • Star Trek: TNG- Data, Worf
  • Star Trek: DS9- no sneezes, but an episode where Miles and the doc are trapped and do some cute guy boding while Miles is ill and running a fever
  • Chilly Willy the Penguin
  • Darkwing Duck
