Title: Snow Rain Drabble 4

Author: tarotgal

Fandom: The O.C.

Rating: G

Pairings: canon ones (see spoilers)

Disclaimer: Not mine. Don't sue, please.

Spoilers: This takes place directly after last night's episode (I just loved all the wet!boy moments!) which is 2x14 in the series, "The Rainy Day Women". It does not directly mention pairings and plots so doesn't *really* spoil anything, but it comes close and would make a whole lot more sense if you've seen the show up to this point and especially the aforementioned episode.

Summary: Ryan's wet, miserable, heartbroken, and sneezy

Word count: 500

Notes: I had a snow day yesterday and today (2/24/05 and 2/25/05), and couldn't resist writing some snow drabbles. This one turned out as rain because, well, it doesn't snow in California. I just couldn't resist wet!Ryan at the end of the episode.

Snow Rain Drabble 4

"huhhh... huhh-SHOO!" Ryan gave a hard sniff and rubbed the back of his hand against his nose. Rain fell upon him, soaking him to the core. His hair, dark and limp, stuck to his forehead and sides of his head. Drops rolled down his wet face onto his chest.

He opened his eyes, looking out at the darkness of the beach. The moon and stars, which normally would have given enough light to see the sand and the waves crashing upon the shore, had been blocked out by storm clouds. From the sound of the ocean, however, he could tell it was choppy and angry, and he remembered Seth's comment earlier about how the weather appropriately reflecting emotional states.

He heard footsteps beside him, and suddenly the rain pouring down upon him ceased. Marissa was there, sharing her umbrella with him. She stood close enough for him to smell her perfume and to feel her warmth. There was so much they could have said, but neither spoke. Ryan's eyes gestured towards the umbrella with appreciation, and Marissa's expression showed she understood. There was something more behind her eyes, which were usually so telling. She looked out at the dark beach and seemed lost in thought just like Ryan.

Ryan had done everything he could to keep her. He had sacrificed. He had shown unbelievable levels of kindness. He had even convinced her to do some things that he knew were better left alone even if they would help her stay. But, in the end, she left. All his caring and all that he was hadn't been enough.

He knew it was better to try than to give up. He had learned that much from his living with the Cohens and from last summer in Chino. But everything always seemed to end anyway, and just once he wished it would work out.

"huhhhCHOO! uhhhh-Chooo!" He sniffed again into the back of his hand.

"If you're coming down sick, you really shouldn't be out in this weather," Marissa reasoned.

He nodded in agreement but did not move. He'd spent more time in the rain than out of it lately. But he didn't care any more. Which was what had led him to stand there in the pouring rain with total disregard to himself in the first place.

     "huhhh-huhhhShuhh!"

He felt an arm slip around his shoulders. "Things don't seem to hurt as much in the rain, do they?" she said. "I mean, no matter how bad it feels you can always blame some of it on the rain. So it's not really so bad."

     Ryan nodded again and sniffed.

She reached up and felt his forehead. Compared to the cold rain, it was warm. "But I still think you should get out of the rain. I'll walk you home. I have nothing better to do anyway."

Not wanting to delve into what that meant, Ryan gave yet another nod and started back with her, glad for the umbrella and the company tonight.
