By the Light of the Lamp
As if it were weighted down, Jack’s hand slid out from under the covers and slowly rose in the air. It pulled a tissue from the box on the nightstand and waved it in Daniel’s direction. Daniel took it and dabbed at his nose, probably grateful to not have it drip anywhere near the pages he was working on transcribing.
Hearing nothing but the sound of snuffling, Jack lifted his head and blinked as his eyes adjusted to the brightness. Daniel was illuminated by the single bendable lamp clipped to the middle of the headboard. The lamp was meant for both of them to use, but it was permanently directed at Daniel these days, as Jack tended to fall asleep the second his head hit the pillow. “You know, you’re never going to get rid of that sniffle unless you get a good night’s sleep,” Jack pointed out.
Daniel considered the pages upon pages of alien text piled high on his lap and weighed it against the man looking groggy and sleepy, lying beside him in bed. “You’re right,” Daniel replied, his voice gravelly and wet. “I’ll just finish up this section and then turn in. It’s only…” He ran his thumb along the edges, doing a quick count. “Twelve more pages.”
From the sound of his exasperated huff, Jack seemed to think that this was far too many pages. He let his head flop back into his pillow.
“hehhh… h’ITttttttshh! Hehtttttchhhhh! EHHTchhhh!”
Without raising his head, Jack felt for and located the tissue box once again. This time, he grabbed hold of the box itself and thrust the whole thing in Daniel’s general direction. It made contact with some part of Daniel’s body, eliciting a soft “Ooof!” from the man. But then Jack heard the sound of appreciative nose blowing… followed inevitably by the rustling of papers. The click of the lamp being switched off. And the swishing of fabric as a body wearing crisp pajamas slid down under fresh sheets.
Finding him under the covers, Jack wrapped his arms and legs around Daniel and held on tight to keep him from going back to his work.
